Gym versus outdoors: Finding the perfect workout setting

Where we exercise has an impact

Two women stretching before outdoors exercise.

When it comes to exercise, one of the most common dilemmas people face is where to work out. Should you hit the gym or embrace the great outdoors?

It is a question that doesn't have a one-size-fits-all answer, as the choice between these two settings can greatly impact your fitness experience. In this blog post, I will explore the pros and cons of exercising at the gym versus exercising outdoors, helping you find the perfect workout setting that aligns with your goals and preferences (hopefully!).

The gym experience

Pros:

  • Variety of equipment: Gyms offer a wide range of exercise equipment, from cardio machines to free weights, resistance machines and specialised gear. This variety allows for diverse workouts that can target various muscle groups.

  • Structure and consistency: Gyms provide a structured environment, with designated areas for different exercises. This can help maintain consistency in workouts and reduce distractions.

  • Professional guidance: Many gyms have certified personal trainers just like yours truly who can provide expert guidance, create personalised workout plans and ensure you are using equipment safely and effectively.

Cons:

  • Membership costs: Gym memberships can be costly for some and such financial commitment may deter some individuals from regular exercise.

  • Crowds and wait times: Popular gyms can get crowded during peak hours, leading to wait times for equipment.

  • Indoor environment: If you prefer natural surroundings, the gym's indoor atmosphere may not be appealing.

Exercising outdoors

Pros:

  • Fresh air and scenic views: Outdoor workouts provide the opportunity to breathe fresh air and enjoy beautiful natural surroundings, enhancing the overall exercise experience.

  • Cost-efficiency: Exercising outdoors is generally free and you don't need an expensive gym membership to stay fit.

  • Versatility: Nature offers a diverse range of workout options, including running, hiking, biking or even bodyweight exercises in a park.

Cons:

  • Weather dependent: Outdoor workouts can be influenced by the weather, making it challenging in extreme conditions.

  • Limited equipment: You may have fewer options for resistance training, which can be a drawback if you have specific strength goals.

  • Accountability: Without the structure of a gym, maintaining a consistent routine might be more challenging.

So there you have it.

Whether you are an outdoors or an indoors person also comes into play when deciding where you want to focus your exercise energies (and spend a significant amount of your free time). For myself, I can happily exercise inside or outside, though I tend to spend more time these days exercising with clients at a gym or in their preferred internal space.

So, choose what works best for you, which environment on balance gives you what you need when you exercise and get the most from your workout.

Which, at the end of the day, is what matters the most when organising any fitness lifestyle.
