Getting Fit as a Family

Fun exercises for parents and children

A fit family.

Parents sometimes ask me about the best and most enjoyable ways to encourage their children to take up a fitness lifestyle.

I don't train with children myself but, based on my experience, below are some tips to encourage the little ones into exercise and fitness. For myself, I began rugby training when I was six years old (and loved it from my first day!), which set me on the path to physical fitness and training.

So, to follow is my advice for parents and carers out there who want to involve children in exercise.

Family fun runs: Lace-up and hit the pavement

There's something special about pounding the pavement as a family. So, lace up your training shoes, head outdoors and embark on a family fun run around your local area or park.

Also, set achievable goals, such as completing a certain distance or reaching a specific landmark and then celebrate your achievements together along the way.

Garden bootcamp: Turn your garden into a fitness playground

If you are lucky to have one, transform your garden into a fitness playground and let the fun begin! Set up stations for activities like jumping jacks, squats, lunges and burpees.

Plus, get creative with equipment like hula hoops, jump ropes and cones. Encourage friendly competition and reward your little ones with high fives and words of encouragement!

Dance party extravaganza: Groove and move to the beat

Who says exercise can't be fun? In this vein, crank up the music and host a dance party extravaganza right in your living room. Encourage your kids to let loose, bust a move and groove to their favourite tunes.

Not only is dancing a fantastic cardio workout, but it also fosters creativity and self-expression.

Nature hikes: Explore the great outdoors together

Venture into nature and embark on a family hike to explore the great outdoors. Whether it's a scenic trail, a local nature reserve or a nearby park, immerse yourselves in the beauty of nature while getting your bodies moving.

Plus, doing so is a great way to encourage your kids to spot wildlife, collect leaves and connect with the natural world around them.

Playground playtime: Swing, slide and climb

Head to the nearest playground and let your inner child come out to play! When there, join your kids on the swings, race down the slides and conquer the monkey bars together.

Playground playtime not only provides an opportunity for physical activity but also strengthens family bonds and creates lasting memories.

Making fitness a family affair: Why it matters

By engaging in physical activity together as a family, you're not only promoting health and fitness but also fostering valuable life skills and positive habits. You're leading by example, showing your children that exercise can be enjoyable, empowering and a natural part of everyday life.

So there you have it – my roundup of fun and engaging exercises that parents and kids can enjoy together.

Remember though, that the goal isn't just to break a sweat but also to create lasting memories, strengthen family bonds and lay the foundation for a lifetime of health and well-being.

So grab your water bottles and get moving as a family!
