I get asked regularly as to the best fruits to eat to help fuel a solid workout.
For me, the humble banana cannot be beaten in this regard.
Bananas are carbohydrate carbohydrate-rich and can provide an energy boost to anyone that works out (in or out of the gym!).
Bananas can also lower blood pressure (due to the potassium and magnesium they contain), which in turn supports a healthy heart and stronger bones, whilst the high fibre content of bananas contributes to better digestion.
In addition, bananas contain vitamin B6, which helps cognitive ability.
One banana a day provides a nutrition boost for anyone who works out and though a typical banana contains around 14 grams of naturally occurring sugar, its high fibre content helps slow the absorption of this sugar into the bloodstream.
Each average-sized banana typically contains around 100 calories, but less than half a gram of fat and provide an easily absorbed source of carbohydrates - the perfect fuel for a challenging workout.
Plus, if you pair a banana with a protein source or shake it will aid in refusing your glycogen stores post-workout and will also replace any potassium lost in sweat during prolonged exercise.
So don’t overlook the banana. It is your workout friend!
